Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the job advertisement that I have seen in an Australian magazine.

I am interested in this job. The reason behind it is that I like to spend time with children. Additionally, I am fond of playing some indoor and outdoor activities.

Moreover, from my perspective, I think I would be the best person for this job because I have completed my studies in early childhood education as well as early childhood assistance. I also have hands-on experience from two designated schools and child care. I also have two children and as a mother I know the duties and responsibilities for a child.

Furthermore, I usually invest my time with children to fulfill their needs related to their health and their educational purpose, such as drawing and also completing their school projects.

I look forward to seeing a response from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Amarjeet Kour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. However, the response to the third bullet point—how you would spend your free time—is missing entirely. You mentioned your professional duties with children, but you did not describe your personal interests or activities for your leisure time in Australia. To improve, ensure you dedicate a full paragraph to each requirement of the prompt. Additionally, the opening sentence is slightly inappropriate; you express 'concern' regarding an advertisement, which sounds negative. A more natural approach would be to express 'interest' or 'enthusiasm' for the position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the lack of a specific section addressing your free time creates a gap in the flow of the letter. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that directly answers one part of the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your professional background effectively. You use relevant terms such as 'early childhood education' and 'hands-on experience'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'invest my time with children' (usually 'spend time') or 'educational purpose' (which is vague). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language to make your writing sound more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are grammatically correct and easy to understand, which is good. There are some minor errors, such as 'I am writing to express my concern regarding the job advertisement that I have seen' (the present perfect 'have seen' is unnecessary here; 'saw' would be better). You also have some repetitive sentence beginnings. To improve, try to use a wider range of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and pay closer attention to verb tense consistency.
