Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to you after seeing a magazine advertisement posted by you regarding your six-year-old child.

I am interested in this job because I have taken care of many children in the past because of the hectic schedule of their parents. I can say that i would definitely love doing this job again.

I consider myself a suitable candidate for this job because i have certification of an early childhood educator with the help of that I would be able to help the child in his studies and his extracurricular activities.

I can assure you that you child is going to learn many new things.

During my free time i would love to explore different tourists spots in Australia along with that i would prefer visiting different parks and gardens. Visiting different food restaurants and cultural places will be on list too.

I will look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Rohan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the interest in the job, detailing suitability, and describing plans for free time. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you are a suitable candidate could be more detailed by providing specific examples of your experience with children rather than just mentioning a certification. Similarly, the plans for free time are listed rather than described in a way that shows genuine engagement with the Australian context. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with more specific details and personal context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to qualifications and finally to personal plans. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'along with that' and 'in addition' could be varied to improve the flow. Additionally, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Using a wider range of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the child', 'this job') is consistently clear would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'early childhood educator' and 'extracurricular activities'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing like 'different' and 'job'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to childcare and travel. For example, instead of 'different food restaurants', you could use 'diverse culinary experiences'. There are no significant spelling errors, but the overall lexical variety is restricted to a fairly basic level, which prevents a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips that affect the accuracy of the writing. For example, you frequently fail to capitalize the personal pronoun 'I', and there are minor errors in article usage (e.g., 'you child' instead of 'your child'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'with the help of that I would be able to'. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic punctuation and capitalization errors, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
