Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Parents,
I am writing to apply for a childcare job, as published in an magazine this Sunday.
I have been working with the kids for the past ten years in my home country Canada, and I always fascinate to work with different communities in different countries. So, this would be a great opportunity to fulfill my dreams to work at new place.
Since I mentioned that I have gained valuable experience in the field, I feel I would be suitable for the job. Moreover, I can speak three languages such as English, Punjabi and Hindi fluently, so I can easily mix up with your child. In addition, I can prepare all the meals, as I have been cooking since my childhood, which will work as a asset for you while you are at work.
Apart from it, I like outdoors activities such as trekking and horse ridding, and Australia is popular in the world for these activities. Being in the country, I would like to spend my free times doing these stuff. If you feel comfortable, your child can also join me.
Please let me know what you think about it. I would appreciate it if you could response to this letter.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
PJ

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your motivation for the job, highlighted your experience and language skills as suitability factors, and described your intended free-time activities in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Parents' contradicts the instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam'. While the ideas are relevant, some could be developed further; for instance, explaining how your specific childcare experience in Canada would translate to the needs of a six-year-old would strengthen your argument. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Apart from it' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used with minor errors, such as 'Apart from it' which is less natural than 'Apart from that' or 'Furthermore'. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To reach a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used with more natural variety and precision.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'valuable experience', 'communities', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'fascinate to work' (should be 'fascinated by the prospect of working') and 'mix up with your child' (which sounds informal or slightly confusing; 'bond with' or 'interact with' would be better). Additionally, 'work as a asset' contains a minor article error. Despite these slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in an magazine' (article error), 'working with the kids' (slightly informal), and 'horse ridding' (spelling error). You also have issues with verb forms, such as 'I always fascinate' instead of 'I am always fascinated'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy would also help elevate your score.
