Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my interest in the job posting, which was posted in Australian magazine on 25th July.

Working as a part of a family is the main reason for my interest in this job. I have been searching for a job in Australis for five months, as a personal chef, who can work in a house. Unfortunately, I could not get the desire job. Once I saw this job posting yesterday, I tough my search is over, as I always prefer to work with a family.

Having worked as a house help for five years, I have developed essential skills, which includes cooking, cleaning and performing basic house hold tasks. Moreover, I do a certification of child care, which would be beneficial while taking care of your little one. I strongly believe that my experience makes me a highly suitable candidate for this particular type of job.

I would prefer to explore the museums, city, market, to explore the culture of Australia, during weekend or free time.

I have attached my resume for you to review and look forward to the possibility of an interview.

Yours faithfully,

Nardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your motivation, detail your suitability through your background in domestic work and childcare, and describe your plans for free time. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir' does not match the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of your childcare experience could be slightly more detailed to fully convince the reader of your suitability. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the task requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Once I saw', which help link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure provides a coherent response that guides the reader through your application without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'job posting', 'essential skills', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'tough' instead of 'thought', 'desire' instead of 'desired', and 'house hold' instead of 'household'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common terms. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I have been searching for a job... as a personal chef, who can work in a house.' There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I do a certification of child care' (should be 'I hold a certificate') and 'which was posted in Australian magazine' (missing an article). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor errors in sentence construction. Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your message.
