Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my strong interest in someone to live with a family for six months and look after your six year old child, as advertised in an Australian magazine. I would be grateful for the opportunity to live with your family and look after your child.

At present, i am pursing my studies at Ajayi crowther University, where am developing a social academic foundation in child caring. My summer break commences on 1st July, from which point i will be fully available for employment until December,as specified in your advertisement.

I have undertaken independent research related to children studies and heritage interpretation, which has enhanced my understanding of child care. I am particularly motivated by the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practical real-world setting.

In addition, i bring strong organizational abilities , proficiency computer systems and well-developed communication skills. I am confident that these competencies would enable me to contribute effectively to the family, child care and day to day home management

I would welcome the opportunity to be part of your family and contribute positively to your home. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Mayowa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the interest in the job, detailing suitability, and mentioning free time. However, the third bullet point regarding how you would spend your free time in Australia is entirely missing from the text. This is a significant omission that prevents the response from fully addressing the task requirements. While the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, the failure to include one of the key instructions limits the score. To improve, ensure you check off each bullet point before concluding your writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks that separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'At present' to link your thoughts. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor punctuation errors and the lack of a transition to the missing bullet point. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent, though the omission of the final requirement affects the logical completeness of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'commences', 'competencies', and 'heritage interpretation'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'social academic foundation' which is slightly unnatural in this context. You also have some repetitive phrasing, such as 'look after your child' appearing twice in the opening. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetition would enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and missing articles (e.g., 'proficiency computer systems' should be 'proficiency in computer systems'). There are also some punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on proofreading for basic mechanical errors like capitalization and subject-verb agreement to improve your accuracy.
