Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing this email to express my keen interest for temporary baby sitting job and i think this would be the best opportunity to earn while I'm on my summer vacation.

My summer vacation is starting from next week and I would appreciate the chance to spend my time with family while taking care of a toddler. I have grown up living with siblings, cousins and I do know how to take care of a child. The Scheduled time of sleep and eat matters the most. To add on, small babies love being around me because of my kind and playful nature. I'm sure I will be the great fit to ensure the safety of your child while you are away for you work.

I wanted to visit the new park in our town but did not get a chance. Therefor, I and your precious child can spend our evenings with nature filled with chirping of birds. I would enjoy to dive deep in my live drawing skills, and if you want to I can encourage the tiny human to join me. That way he or she will learn a new skill at an early stage.

I know, I seem to excited for this chance, but I really feel joyful being with kids. I hope you will grant my request.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your interest, detailing your suitability, and describing your free-time plans. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter of application. However, the content is slightly inconsistent; for instance, you mention a 'temporary baby sitting job' and a 'toddler,' but the prompt specifies a six-month stay looking after a six-year-old. Additionally, the reference to 'the new park in our town' is confusing, as you are applying to move to Australia. To improve, ensure your details align more closely with the specific scenario provided in the prompt to demonstrate full task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To add on' and 'That way,' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Therefor, I and your precious child.' The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the new park') is clear and contextually relevant to the reader. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, including phrases like 'keen interest,' 'playful nature,' and 'grant my request.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'live drawing skills' (likely meaning 'life drawing') and 'nature filled with chirping of birds,' which sounds slightly awkward. While you attempt to use more descriptive language, some collocations are not entirely natural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are idiomatic for a formal or semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I'm writing this email to express my keen interest for temporary baby sitting job' (missing articles), 'I and your precious child' (incorrect pronoun order), and 'I would enjoy to dive deep' (incorrect verb pattern). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with comma usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
