Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested in a child-care job that you posted on Australian Magazine.

I like doing this job because I am quite interested in spending time, taking care and playing with a children. Also, i have done a graduation in this field, this is also the reason why i like doing this job.

I would be a suitable candidate for this job as I have a niece at my home, who like to spend most of her time with me and I also take care of her all the time whenever nobody is around. So, i think i can take care of your child as i already doing with niece.

I spend my free time while playing with my little niece, I also tell her stories related to fairies and so on, which she likes most. There are many qualities in me that will be helpful for me to take care of your children.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Navdeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your interest in the job, provide reasons for your suitability, and describe how you would spend your free time. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of your free time is repetitive, focusing again on your niece rather than exploring activities you might enjoy in Australia. To improve, ensure you provide more specific, varied details that fully flesh out your ideas. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be more professional in its phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'So' to link your ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to'). Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'as i already doing with niece', where the grammatical structure is incomplete, affecting the cohesion of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'candidate', 'child-care', and 'qualities'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with the use of 'doing' and 'take care of'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'done a graduation' (should be 'completed a degree') and 'on Australian Magazine' (should be 'in an Australian magazine'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary and avoid repeating the same phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include missing articles ('on Australian Magazine'), incorrect verb forms ('as i already doing'), and capitalization errors ('i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles will help improve your accuracy significantly.
