Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/ Ma,

My name is Oluoma, a 25 years old graduate and I am writing this letter in order to show interest about the job opening that was put out on the daily times newspaper about looking after a 6 years old child for a period of 6 months.

As a graduate, I am currently job hunting and hoping to get one soon. The moment I saw the advert about the position, I realized I need to find something doing while I figure out what next to do with me life. In addition, the money I will get from the work will enable me pay my bills and support my family.

Growing up with six siblings, I got to understand the importance of care and love. Also, I was privileged to work in a day care as a nanny when I was still a student and to add to it, sometimes I look after my neighbors kids while they work and I can get recommendations from them to show how competent I am for the role.

Moreover, during my leisure time while staying in Australia, I scheduled to visit the park because I heard it has a great view, also I heard the library has a good books, I will also check it out.

Thank you and I am looking forward to a positive feedback.

Yours faithfully,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant background experience, and outline your leisure plans in Australia. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why you want the job focuses heavily on personal financial gain rather than a genuine interest in childcare or cultural exchange, which would be more persuasive in a formal letter. To improve, try to expand on how your skills specifically benefit the family, rather than just listing your past roles. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir/ Ma' is slightly informal compared to the standard 'Dear Sir or Madam' requested.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Also', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit abrupt. For example, the final paragraph regarding leisure time is quite brief and lacks a smooth connection to the previous section about your childcare experience. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph develops a single, clear theme with more sophisticated internal cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'job hunting', 'competent', and 'recommendations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'put out on the daily times newspaper' (should be 'advertised in') and 'something doing' (should be 'something to do'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and formal expressions suitable for a professional application letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'a 25 years old graduate' (should be 'a 25-year-old graduate'), 'me life' (should be 'my life'), 'enable me pay' (should be 'enable me to pay'), and 'neighbors kids' (should be 'neighbors' kids'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct usage of possessives and prepositions.
