Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in your recent advertisement that you have given in the magazine. I understand that you are looking for someone to look after your six-year-old child and stay with your family.

I would love to share my academic background. I have total five years of academic education. One of it is three years of graduation course in child psychology and another one is two years of diploma course in child care. In addition to that I have two years of work experience, in which I took care of four months old and two years old babies. I am pretty confident about handling child when it is crying, maintaining their sleep routine and hygiene.

My top priority for the job was to stay with a family so that it becomes easy for me to navigate life in this foreign country. One of my school friends is living in the same town that will allow me to visit her during my free time. I will be exploring the town and create memories with her whenever I have spare time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained your motivation for the job, provided relevant details regarding your qualifications in child psychology and childcare, and described your plans for your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure you provide more specific details about your childcare experience; for instance, mentioning specific activities you enjoyed with the children would strengthen your application. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition to that' and 'One of my school friends', to connect your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'academic background', 'child psychology', and 'navigate life' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'One of it is three years of graduation course', which is slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary related to childcare and professional settings. Your spelling is accurate throughout the text, and your vocabulary is adequate for the requirements of this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I have total five years of academic education' (should be 'a total of five years') and 'handling child when it is crying' (should be 'handling children when they are crying'). Additionally, 'One of my school friends is living in the same town that will allow me' is slightly awkward. Increasing your control over articles and pluralization will help improve your accuracy. Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not impede communication.
