Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter in response to an advertisement in an Australian magazine stating that your family is looking for someone to stay with you for a six months and take care of your six year old child. I believe that this job suits me because I have genuine interest in caring for children.
I really enjoy spending time with young children. In addition, I am responsible, reliable and have patience needed to look after a six year old child. I have experience caring for young children at a junior nursery school. As I recently moved to this city, I am looking for suitable job. I believe I can provide appropriate care for your children, because I received professional training from experienced teachers at a junior nursery school.
In my spare time, I also volunteer to care for children at an orphanage. I believe this opportunity will help me gain valuable experience and contribute to my career development as social worker.
I look forward to your positive response.
Your faithfully,
Bijal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation, provided relevant details about your suitability, and mentioned your volunteer work. However, the third bullet point regarding how you would spend your free time in Australia is not fully addressed. You mentioned volunteering, but this is presented as a career development activity rather than how you would spend your leisure time. To improve, ensure you explicitly describe your hobbies or interests outside of work to give the parents a better sense of your personality. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening and closing salutations need to be more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'As I recently moved', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother. The overall progression is clear, but the letter feels slightly mechanical in its structure. To reach a higher band, try to integrate your ideas more fluidly using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph transitions naturally into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'genuine interest', 'professional training', and 'career development'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'suitable job' (should be 'a suitable job') and the closing 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and varied adjectives to describe your skills and experiences, which will make your writing more engaging and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('a six months' should be 'six months', 'a junior nursery school' is used correctly, but 'a six year old child' needs hyphens: 'six-year-old'). Additionally, there is a minor error in the closing salutation. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and punctuation, particularly with compound adjectives.
