Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my interest in applying for the position of living with a family for six months and taking care of their young child. I recently found this in an advertisement stating "Need for Volunteer in area" and I believe I would be the perfect candidate for this role.
Firstly, I have been looking for a related job for a long time and I would like to be part of a family in Australia as I am living alone, far from my parents. This opportunity will give me the chance to learn different culture, valuable childcare experience and improve my language skills which would be beneficial as I am very new to this country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to address all parts of the task due to its incomplete nature. While you successfully explain why you want the job and touch upon your suitability, the letter cuts off abruptly before detailing how you would spend your free time. Furthermore, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely limits your ability to develop your ideas. To improve, you must ensure all three bullet points are covered in detail and that you meet the word count to allow for full development of your arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The letter begins with a clear purpose and uses a standard opening. However, because the text is incomplete, it is difficult to assess the overall logical progression. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Furthermore' is appropriate for a formal letter, but the abrupt ending prevents the development of a coherent structure. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully connected and that you use a wider range of linking words to guide the reader through your points logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally accurate but somewhat basic. Phrases like 'perfect candidate' and 'valuable childcare experience' are appropriate for the context. However, there is a lack of variety and sophistication. For instance, 'learn different culture' should be 'learn about a different culture'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to childcare and cultural exchange. The current range is sufficient for basic communication but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammar is generally understandable, but there are noticeable errors. For example, 'I recently found this in an advertisement' is slightly awkward, and 'learn different culture' lacks an article. You have attempted some complex sentence structures, such as 'which would be beneficial as I am very new to this country', which shows some control. However, the frequency of minor errors and the incomplete nature of the text limit the assessment. Focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement to improve your accuracy.
