Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my interest in applying for the position of living with a family for six months and taking care of their young child. I recently found this in an advertisement stating "Need for a Volunteer" and I believe I would be the perfect candidate for this role.

Firstly, I have been looking for a related job for a long time and I would like to be part of a family in Australia as I am living alone, far from my parents. This opportunity will give me the chance to learn about a different culture, gain valuable childcare experience and improve my language skills which would be beneficial as I am very new to this country.

Furthermore, I have suitable experience in childcare as I have been looking after my two young siblings for several year. Also, I am a patient, caring and responsible person. I can assist with homework, playing educational games, cooking simple meals and also other small chores like organizing closets, making beds, and many more. I can remain calm in any difficult situations.

In my free time in Australia, I would like to visit famous tourist attractions and learn to be fluent in English by attending classes. I would be open to making new friends to learn about different cultures and participate in traditional ceremonies.

Thank you for considering my applicationa and looking forward to hear a positive reponse.

Yours faithfully,

Carla

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job, provide relevant details regarding your childcare experience and personal qualities, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a live-in childcare position. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning to the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'In my free time' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. While the transition between some sentences could be slightly more sophisticated, the overall structure is coherent and meets the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and with some precision. Phrases like 'valuable childcare experience', 'perfect candidate', and 'participate in traditional ceremonies' are well-chosen. There are a few minor errors, such as 'applicationa' (spelling) and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'hearing'), but these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more varied and less common collocations to describe your skills and aspirations, moving beyond standard descriptive adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'several year' (should be 'several years') and the aforementioned 'looking forward to hear'. These are non-systematic errors that do not affect the clarity of your writing. You show good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which allows for a smooth reading experience. Continued attention to verb forms and pluralization will help you achieve even greater accuracy.
