Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to live with your family and take care of your six-year-old child for six months. I would be very interesting in this position because I am current pursuing a course in Childcare Management, and would like to gain practical; experience in the field.
I believe, I would be suitable for this job because I am patient, responsible and caring. I have always enjoyed spending time with children and understand the importance of keeping them safe and engaged. IN addition, my Childcare course has helped me to learn about childrens' needs, behaviour and development. I would be happy to assist your child with homework, play educational games and taking part in other activities.
During my free time, i would like to explore australia and learn more about its cultures and lifestyle. I would also enjoy visiting local parks, museum and other places of interest. In addition, i plan to increase knowledge in my field by reading books and watching educational videos. This would help me make my stay both enjoyable and useful.
I would be very greatful, if you could provide me with further information about the position, including working hours and accomodation arrangements. I would be looking forward hearing from you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the role, provide relevant personal attributes and qualifications, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal application letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing the reader with a clear picture of your suitability for the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully expanded; for instance, you could have specified which particular educational activities you would engage in with the child to demonstrate even greater depth of thought.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'During my free time' to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between your childcare course and the specific activities you would do with the child could be more tightly integrated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'pursuing a course', 'practical experience', and 'places of interest' are used correctly. There are some minor errors, such as 'greatful' (grateful) and 'accomodation' (accommodation), which are spelling slips. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on precise word choice and ensuring correct spelling will help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing in response to...' and 'I would be very grateful if you could...'. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, including 'I am current pursuing' (currently), 'childrens'' (children's), and 'i' (I) not being capitalized. Additionally, there is a punctuation error in 'practical; experience'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and capitalization.
