Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or madam,
I am writing to express my interest in the job advertisement you posted in an Austrailian magazine.
I am currently studying in Canada for my Master degree and planning to do my research semester in an Austrailia. I would like to take this job as I will get a chance to live with family as I easily feel home-sick. Apart from this, I have two younger siblings whom I had taken care for my whole life.
I am good with children and understand their emotional needs. They needs to look after with care and affection. In addition to this, I can cook meals for her and teach her new concepts about the cookings and the animals. It will be really fun for her young mind.
I am studying about marine animals and beaches of Austrailia hold diversity, which is helpful for research. In my free time, I will be looking for different speices on the beach and study about them.
I look forward hearing from you.
Yours faithfully.
Robin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your interest, detailing your suitability, and describing your free-time activities. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed. For instance, while you mention you are good with children, providing a specific example of an activity you have done with your siblings would have strengthened your argument. Additionally, the connection between your research on marine animals and how you would spend your free time is clear, but the link to the child's care could be more explicitly stated to ensure the letter feels cohesive as a job application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'In addition to this' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your personal research interests more smoothly with your role as a caregiver. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different topics.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'express my interest' and 'emotional needs'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'Austrailian' and 'speices', which occur multiple times. While these do not impede communication, they do affect the overall impression. You attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to your studies, which is good, but some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'teach her new concepts about the cookings'. Focusing on more precise collocations will help you move into a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'They needs to look after' instead of 'They need to be looked after' and 'in an Austrailia' instead of 'in Australia'. Additionally, 'I look forward hearing from you' should be 'I look forward to hearing from you'. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic verb forms and preposition usage.
