Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest for the position of babysitting your six-year-old child for six months you recently advertised in an Australian magazine.

I would love to take this position as it will allow me to get an exposure of the Australian culture and allow me to get to know you better in person. I genuinely think your child will be more comfortable as I enjoy working with younger children around this age. I also need this job to support my financial needs.

I believe, I would be an excellent candidate and a perfect fit for this role as I not only have a professional degree in early childhood course, but also have an impeccable record of two-years of full-time experience as a nanny looking after children of similar ages. I am very calm and easy-going person, and can assure you, your child will love my company. Additionally, I hold a certificate in First-Aid program and a full driving licence with clean record.

While I am in Australia, I would have plenty of free time to explore the famous sites and beaches as I have always dreamed of visiting this place. I love trying different cuisine, taking pictures of the famous landscapes and engaging with local community to fit myself here even more comfortably.

It is once in a lifetime opportunity, and would not give a second thought about this if I am selected for this role. Looking forward to hearing from you and let me know i you need further clarifications from my side.

Yours faithfully,

Sahil.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your motivation for the job, provided relevant details regarding your qualifications and experience, and described your plans for your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent and professional persona throughout the response, which is essential for this type of task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'While I am in', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'impeccable record', 'early childhood course', and 'once in a lifetime opportunity'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'interest for the position' (should be 'interest in') and 'get an exposure of' (should be 'gain exposure to'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You use a variety of words that are appropriate for the context of a job application, showing a good level of flexibility and precision in your word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I believe, I would be' (unnecessary comma), 'two-years of full-time experience' (should be 'two years'), and 'let me know i you need' (typo). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over complex structures is generally good. The punctuation is mostly accurate, and the errors present do not cause any confusion for the reader.
