Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement in an Australian magazine for position of a baby care taker. I would like to apply for this job because I have two years experience of looking after a baby of same age.
To begin with, I believe that I am best suited for this job because I have a good command of taking care of a baby and I assure that your child will become comfortable with me soon because I had completed a course on childcare from an international institution.
In addition to this, I am really fond of babies as, I have grown up in a family where I had to take care of my younger sister because my mother had to go to her job. So, It is easy for me to take care of baby because I am well aware of their dietary needs, sleeping schedules and most importantly their health related issues and how to handle them with care.
Furthermore, I recently enrolled in a paediatrics health safety course in an Australian institution. My classes will be in evening and I would spend my morning time with your baby and in evening I will attend my classes.
I will be grateful if you consider me for this post. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Amna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for applying, provide relevant background regarding your childcare experience, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to potential employers. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the section on your practical experience with dietary and health needs. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your evening classes and your availability is explicitly linked to the family's needs, as you have done well here. The response is purposeful and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the sentence structures are slightly repetitive in their construction. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The referencing is clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow, making the communication effective throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'paediatrics', 'dietary needs', and 'international institution'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'baby care taker' (should be 'nanny' or 'childcare provider') and 'health related issues' (which is slightly informal). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to professional childcare and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I have two years experience' (missing 'of'), 'a baby of same age' (missing 'the'), and 'in evening' (missing 'the'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'as' in the third paragraph. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement remains consistent throughout more complex sentences.
