Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My Name is Navdeep Kaur and I have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine that you are looking someone to take care of your young child and who can stay with your family for six months. I am writing this letter to show my keen interest in this Job.

To commence with, there are various reasons why I am interested in this job. First of all, I have done early childhood educator programme in my college. Secondly I have experience in this field as I have done internship, after that I used to work with some well known organizations. Furthermore, I will need some expenditure to survive in Australia. So if would have this job It would be beneficial for me in terms of finance.

In addition to this, I have lot of friends who are well settled in Australia. I can visit there homes in my leisure time. Apart from this, my best friend Kamal is in Australia I can explore the country with him in free time. We can go to the parks and trails.

Yours Sincerely

Navi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your interest, detailing your suitability, and describing your leisure plans. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly less conventional than the requested 'Dear Sir or Madam'. Your ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat brief. For example, while you mention your internship and education, providing a specific example of a task you performed with children would have strengthened your suitability argument. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In addition to this', and 'Apart from this' to link your points. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between your desire for the job and your financial needs could be smoother. The use of referencing is mostly accurate, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, cohesive text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'early childhood educator', 'internship', and 'leisure time'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have lot of friends' (should be 'a lot of') and 'visit there homes' (should be 'their'). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations related to childcare or professional experience, and ensure that basic grammatical errors do not affect your word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'My Name is' (capitalization error), 'I have done early childhood educator programme' (missing article 'an'), and 'if would have this job' (missing subject 'I'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
