Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you regarding the job posting you advertised in the magazine to take care of 6 year old children while leaving with you.

Actually, I have completed my secondary school recently; therefore, before joining to college I want to get some real job experience. Since I am planning to enroll in children care program, I want to get some idea about job.

I would sure you that I will be the better option for job. I have two younger brother and sister, and they are almost same age of your offspring. I used to take care of them when my parents was not home as a result of this I have some idea how to deal with young children.

I also searched about the area near accommodation. There are many swimming pools near this, where I can learn swimming and use my time to learn new sport while I am staying with you.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Yours sincerely,

Harshpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your motivation, highlighting your suitability, and describing your free-time plans. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention having younger siblings, you could have provided more specific examples of the childcare tasks you performed to better convince the parents of your suitability. Additionally, the opening sentence is slightly awkward in its phrasing regarding 'leaving with you'. To improve, ensure that your explanations are fully expanded to demonstrate a clear and persuasive argument for why you are the ideal candidate for this specific role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'therefore', 'since', and 'as a result of this' to link your sentences. However, some of these transitions are used in a slightly mechanical or repetitive way. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this' or 'that') clearly points to the intended antecedent. Overall, the organization is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the sophisticated flow required for a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'enrol', 'offspring', and 'accommodation'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'joining to college' (instead of 'starting college') and 'searched about the area' (instead of 'researched the area'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions appropriate for a formal application letter, rather than relying on direct translations or basic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I would sure you' (should be 'I would like to assure you'), 'two younger brother and sister' (should be 'brothers and sisters'), and 'when my parents was not home' (should be 'were not home'). These errors are noticeable and occur in basic subject-verb agreement and verb forms. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these slips prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and tense consistency.
