Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Samitha,

I hope you're well and in good health. I am writing this letter to express my interest for the position of a babysitter. Recently, I moved to Australia for my higher studies due to my prior experience as a baby care taker. I would like to apply for this position. Mostly, I am available after 1 pm after the classes. So, I decided to apply for this job.

I have been working in this profession for the last two years. I have two daughters who are teenagers right now. My past nourishment with my children encourages me to apply for this job. I believe as per my experience and skills make me ideal for this work.

I spend most of the time with infants. Although they are innocent, playing with themselves rejuvenate myself. Moreover, this activity can not only keep me mentally calm but also physically fit. I would grateful if you could choose me for this job. Please let me know if you are interested, I would plan an interview at your earliest convenience.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Gurdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained your interest in the job, highlighted your experience as a parent, and mentioned your availability. However, the response to the third bullet point—how you would spend your free time—is somewhat vague. You mention playing with infants to stay fit and calm, but this does not clearly address how you would spend your leisure time while living in Australia, which was the specific requirement. To improve, ensure each bullet point is fully developed with specific, relevant details. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening salutation was slightly inconsistent with the prompt's instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'Although,' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from your studies to your availability is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rejuvenate,' 'convenience,' and 'profession.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'past nourishment' is not the correct way to describe raising children, and 'playing with themselves' is grammatically and semantically awkward in this context. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations related to childcare and professional applications would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would grateful' (missing 'be'), 'as per my experience and skills make me' (redundant structure), and 'playing with themselves' (incorrect reflexive pronoun usage). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs. Proofreading for small omissions, such as missing auxiliary verbs, will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
