Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
While flicking the pages of an esteemed Australian magazine, I learned about the job you posted. I would like to take up this opportunity as it is directly related to studies. Currently I am pursuing early childhood education programme from the Brisbane University and as a part of my final year internship I am allowed to work and gain some hand-on experience.
During my studies, I have learned myriad techniques to help children grow and learn in a fun and interactive way. Moreover, I also completed a 3 months of practical training as a part of my curriculum, which has significantly boosted my confidence and morale. I was able to score an A grade in my recent exams.
Would you be kind enough to look into my proposal? I have also made a 6 months plan which I will be sharing with you on my joining day. Furthermore, during my free hours I can help in other home chores such as cleaning and gardening. Since I have been living away from my family for studies, I have developed some household skills as well.
Hoping to hear back soon from you.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant details about your background in early childhood education, and touch upon how you would spend your free time. However, the third bullet point regarding free time is slightly under-developed. While you mention helping with chores, the prompt asks how you would spend your free time in Australia, which usually implies personal leisure or exploration. Expanding on your personal interests or desire to explore the local culture would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Since', which effectively link your sentences and paragraphs. The structure is sound, and the transition between your educational background and your willingness to help with household tasks is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for the context provided.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'esteemed', 'myriad', 'curriculum', and 'interactive' appropriately. This shows an ability to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or sophisticated collocations related to childcare or professional experience could elevate the response further. Overall, your lexical control is strong and fits the formal requirements of the task well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'Since I have been living away from my family for studies, I have developed some household skills as well' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few grammatical errors; however, there is a minor omission in the first paragraph: 'I am pursuing early childhood education programme' should be 'an early childhood education programme'. Additionally, 'hand-on' should be 'hands-on'. Despite these minor slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is generally very good.
