Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding a job opening that recently caught my attention while I was reading an Australian magazine.

I would love to be considered for this job because I will be moving to Australia soon for my further studies and this job would be perfect for me to get settled in the country for the first 6 months.

I am a very patient and friendly person. And I have a sibling, my small brother, who is 8 years younger than me and him being the solely reason why i genuinely adore kids. Therefore, I would love to be a nanny and take care of your kid, when you are either busy working or doing your daily chores.

Moreover, I would like to use my free time going out to nearby neighbourhoods - exploring the city, the food, the culture and getting to meet new people. I would also love to take your child out with me for some fun outings, let's say for playing in the garden with other children or maybe going for an ice-cream walk.

Please feel free to contact me and ask me any more questions if you would like, I will be more than happy to answer them. I really look forward to this job and hope i get selected.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Sreedevi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant personal details regarding your suitability, and describe your plans for your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to potential employers. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear picture of your situation and your enthusiasm for the role. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the response, ensuring that the reader understands your intentions and qualifications effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between some sentences could be smoother to improve the overall flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which contributes to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'job opening', 'further studies', and 'genuinely adore' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'solely reason' instead of 'sole reason' and 'ice-cream walk', which sounds slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated or precise collocations would help elevate the score. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'him being the solely reason' (which should be 'he is the sole reason') and 'hope i get selected' (where 'I' should be capitalized). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary period after 'Dear Sir or Madam'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further improve your score.
