Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the childcare position that was recently published in The Perth Star Magazine. I am highly interested to live with your family and take care about your six year old child.

I would love to take on this role because I have always wanted to experience Australian culture. Also, living with a local family while caring for a child feels like the perfect way to immerse myself in a new environment.

As I have experience with young children where I worked for an NGO as a part-time teaching assistant, I can easily correlate with the need of the children.

As for my free time, I plan to make the most of my six months in Australia. I am a professional photographer, so I intend to spend my weekends exploring the local landscapes, beaches, and wildlife.

I hope you will consider my request favourably. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your faithfully,

Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for applying, provide relevant details regarding your experience as a teaching assistant, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about your childcare experience, such as the age range of the children you worked with or specific activities you enjoyed leading, to further strengthen your suitability for the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'As for my', and 'I am a professional photographer, so...' to link your ideas. While the structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat simple. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'immerse myself', 'favourably', and 'professional photographer'. However, there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'take care about' (should be 'take care of') and 'correlate with the need of the children' (which is slightly unnatural). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered highly precise. Expanding your range to include more idiomatic or topic-specific collocations related to childcare would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There is a minor error in the closing: 'Your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully'. Additionally, 'six year old child' requires hyphens ('six-year-old'). Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is generally good, and the meaning is always clear. To achieve a higher band, ensure that you consistently apply punctuation rules for compound adjectives and check for small grammatical slips in your final proofreading.
