Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Sandra and I am a resident of Buttermill Society, in UK. I have seen your advertisement in a magazine and was really excited to reach out to you for babysitting.
It will be a good hand on experience for me because of the course I am currently enrolled for. i.e. PSW.
Our college would consider this experience for my profile for NGO's. About me, I love to travel and meet new people from different culture, I'm also very good with kids. Attached is my certificate with experience in babysitting.
Additionally, my time in Australia will be exploring the country with some project work. I have my extended family there so it will be amazing to catch up and meet my Aunt.
Thank you for reading my letter and considering my application. You can always reach out to me on this email or call me anytime.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Thank you,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for wanting the job, suitability, and plans for free time. However, the development of these ideas is quite thin. For instance, the explanation of why you are suitable is limited to a brief mention of being 'good with kids' and an attached certificate, which lacks the depth expected for a formal application. The mention of 'project work' during your free time is vague and does not provide a clear picture of how you would balance your responsibilities. To improve, you should expand on your childcare experience and provide more specific, engaging details about your interests in Australia to better persuade the parents.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'About me' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing is a bit fragmented. For example, the second paragraph is very short, which disrupts the overall progression. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences are connected more fluidly, rather than relying on simple, short statements.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'good hand on experience' (likely meaning 'hands-on') and 'reach out to you for babysitting' are functional but somewhat informal. There is also a minor error in 'different culture' (should be plural 'cultures'). To improve, incorporate more precise collocations related to childcare and professional applications, such as 'relevant experience,' 'child development,' or 'cultural immersion.' The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but it does not demonstrate a wide or flexible range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'course I am currently enrolled for' (should be 'enrolled in'), 'NGO's' (incorrect use of apostrophe for plural), and 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that gerunds are used correctly after phrases like 'looking forward to.' Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help.
