Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine that you are looking for a person to live with your family and take care of your six-year-old child. So I am interested for this job and I have a little experience as well.

To begin with, I like this job, because it is fascinating to play with child and living with family will be beneficial for me as well. Moreover, I would be a suitable person for this job as I have an experience of this types of job and I am a responsible person and having good qualities that will effect on your child in a positive way.

Furthermore, I know some basic necessity of child and they start demand for that but I know how to manage and divert them. Along with this, I would spend my spare time in doing some sorts of activities like, Gym, watching movies and reading books when I am in Australia. Let me know what you think!

Sincerely

Jeel Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the interest in the job, detailing suitability, and describing plans for free time. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you are suitable is quite general, relying on vague phrases like 'good qualities' rather than specific examples of childcare experience. To improve, you should provide concrete details, such as mentioning specific age groups you have worked with or particular responsibilities you have handled. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be slightly more professional in its phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the connection between the ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition in the second paragraph regarding your suitability is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme would improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'do some sorts of activities' and 'some basic necessity of child' are slightly unnatural and imprecise. You rely on simple descriptors, which limits your ability to convey your suitability for the role effectively. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to childcare and personal attributes. For example, instead of saying you have 'good qualities', you could describe yourself as 'patient', 'nurturing', or 'reliable'. Expanding your range of collocations will help make your writing sound more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I am interested for this job' (should be 'in'), 'I have an experience of this types of job' (should be 'experience in these types of jobs'), and 'they start demand for that' (should be 'they start demanding that'). While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly with prepositions, pluralization, and verb forms. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
