Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the job posting of a nanny. I recently came across the advertisement you posted on the magazine, and I believe my availability and skills are aligning with your requirements.

I am new in Sydney and looking for a reliable accommodation as well as a part- time job. I am pursuing Masters and my classes are in the evening and to support my daily expenses, I am looking for a job.

About me, I love to spend time with children, I believe they are the most innocent, and one can forget all their worries around them. As I take care of my nephew in my home country, who is around the same age of your child, I can take good care of your baby and use my experience of handling a toddler.

I am available in the mornings, so while you are at work, I can manage your child and can cook food for him. I can take him to local parks for the play time. I know a lot of rhymes to engage them and which can help them in learning also.

Thank you for consedring my application.

Yours Sincerely

Jessica Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant details about your suitability (experience with your nephew), and mention your availability. However, the third bullet point regarding how you would spend your free time in Australia is missing from the response. This is a significant omission as it is a specific requirement of the task. To improve, ensure you carefully check that every instruction in the prompt is addressed in your final draft. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be slightly more professional in its structure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'About me' and 'As I take care of', to link your thoughts. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between your academic studies and your experience with children could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'engage them', where the antecedent is slightly ambiguous. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'availability', 'requirements', and 'accommodations'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'aligning with your requirements' (should be 'align with') and 'on the magazine' (should be 'in the magazine'). You also have a spelling error with 'consedring'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you should aim to use more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am pursuing Masters and my classes are in the evening'. There are several grammatical slips, including 'I am new in Sydney' (should be 'I am new to Sydney') and 'around the same age of your child' (should be 'as your child'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'About me, I love to spend time with children, I believe they are the most innocent'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
