Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in response to the advert for a nanny for your adorable child. This is to indicate interest in the job. I have been a nanny and also a career for an elderly woman for more than two years before her demise. The passion I have for kids , is what informed my resolve to take up the job.

Before now, I thought children between the age age of 3-6, which is one the my source of experience and the passion behind taking care of kids and also teaching them the basic principle of English, Mathematics and Civic studies, which will make it easier while in school.

I have been longing to visit Australia, and visit park and experience the wild life and beach sites, your child will definitely enjoy my company and I will be taking her along with me to also have a feel. I believe being with your child will be fun and memorable to her.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

Stanley

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained your motivation, highlighted your experience as a nanny, and described your plans for free time in Australia. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention your experience with children, the explanation is slightly confusing due to grammatical issues, making it difficult to fully grasp the extent of your qualifications. Additionally, the tone is occasionally inconsistent for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are explained with greater clarity and that the professional tone is maintained throughout the entire response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications and finally to your personal plans. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing in response to' and 'I look forward to'. However, the paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the transition between ideas within paragraphs is occasionally abrupt. For example, the second paragraph attempts to link your experience with your teaching skills, but the sentence structure makes the connection unclear. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'adorable', 'demise', and 'resolve'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'career for an elderly woman' (likely meaning 'carer') and 'before now, I thought children'. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they do indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on learning the correct collocations for professional contexts and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'the passion I have for kids , is what informed' (incorrect comma usage), 'one the my source of experience' (missing words/syntax error), and 'I thought children between the age age of 3-6'. These errors, particularly with articles, prepositions, and sentence construction, are noticeable. While you attempt complex ideas, the lack of accuracy in these structures limits your score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
