Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing in connection with the advertisement you made about your need of an au-pair. I would like to apply for this job. I have a Certification of Childcare service and have been an au-pair for 3-years, I have cared for a newborn and also been employed for 2-years by an Italian family. However, the family had to relocate to the United States of America and I could not join them because I have not been granted visa to travel.

While in Australia and during my free time, I would visit the Nightlife towers and also do some fishings as I heard they are known for seafoods. In addition, I would collect some sea shells and cowries for production of jewelleries.

Thank you for your time. I hope my request will be attended to promptly. I look forward to working with you.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You explained your motivation, provided relevant background regarding your childcare experience, and described your leisure plans. However, the development of these ideas is quite brief. For instance, the explanation of your suitability is limited to a list of past roles without detailing the specific skills you possess that would benefit a six-year-old. Similarly, your plans for free time are somewhat generic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on these points with more descriptive detail, ensuring the content feels more tailored to the specific context of living with a family in Australia.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of writing to your qualifications and finally your personal interests. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is somewhat fragmented. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'In addition', but the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical. The transition between your professional experience and your personal plans is abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the overall readability and logical flow of your response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'relocate', 'advertisement', and 'promptly'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and non-standard collocations, such as 'need of an au-pair' (should be 'need for'), 'do some fishings' (should be 'go fishing'), and 'production of jewelleries' (jewelry is an uncountable noun). These errors do not prevent understanding, but they do indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and common English collocations to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' clause implied in your explanation of the visa issue. There are several grammatical errors, including 'granted visa' (missing article 'a'), '3-years' (should not be hyphenated here), and 'I heard they are known for seafoods' (seafood is uncountable). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage, pluralization of uncountable nouns, and consistent verb tense control, as these are the primary areas where your accuracy currently fluctuates.
