Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Mohammadreza Hadavi, and I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement concerning someone who must live with your family and care for your six-year-old child.

Actually, I am studying psychology, and I intend to pursue a PhD in children's psychology. Your job position gives me a golden opportunity to evaluate my knowledge in a practical atmosphere, which is truly invaluable.

To assure you about my skills, I can send my certification and a recommendation from my master's program. In addition, I have 6 years' experience in diverse workshops related to children. In these workshops, we have taught children to enhance their abilities, especially critical thinking.

I would prefer to spend my free time in nature, since it not only provides me with a meaningful sense of tranquillity but also acts as a sanctuary to escape from the pressures of the fast-paced modern world.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and do not hesitate to ask me any questions that will help you to know more about me.

Yours faithfully,

Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained your motivation for the role, provided relevant details about your background in psychology and workshops, and described your interest in nature for your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about how your experience with children would translate into the daily care of a six-year-old, as this would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more practical application of your skills.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'since', and 'not only... but also' to link your sentences and ideas. The transition between your professional background and your personal interests is smooth. The paragraphing is clear and follows standard letter-writing conventions. The overall structure is coherent and supports the reader's understanding throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'invaluable', 'sanctuary', 'tranquillity', and 'fast-paced'. These choices are precise and appropriate for the context. There is a good awareness of collocation, such as 'pursue a PhD' and 'practical atmosphere'. While the vocabulary is effective and natural, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that are still suitable for a formal letter, though your current range is more than sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is strong, and you use a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'since it not only provides me with...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There is a minor inconsistency in the opening where you introduce yourself as 'Mohammadreza Hadavi' but sign off as 'Adam'; in an exam setting, ensure your name is consistent. Otherwise, the grammatical control is high, and there are no errors that impede communication.
