Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam
I am writing to in response to your advertisement in Australian magazine for someone to live with your family and look after six- year-old child for six months. I am very interested in this position because I enjoy spending time with children and would also love the opportunity to experience Australian culture and lifestyle.
I believe I would be a suitable person for this job because I am responsible patient and friendly. I have experience looking after children in my family and I understand that young children need both care and attention as well as fun activities. I could help your child with simple homework prepare meals play games and take them to the park. I am also reliable and willing to follow your family's daily routine and rules.
During my free time I would like to explore Australia and learn more about its culture and natural beauty. I would enjoy visiting local attractions meeting new people and improving my English.
I look forward to hearing from you.
your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job, provide relevant personal qualities such as being 'responsible' and 'patient', and outline your plans for free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of your experience with children, such as mentioning a particular age group you have worked with or a specific activity you have successfully managed, which would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which aids readability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited; you rely heavily on simple sentence structures and lack a variety of linking words or transition phrases between sentences. For instance, the second paragraph could be improved by using connectors like 'Furthermore' or 'In addition' to link your skills to the tasks you are willing to perform.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly. You use relevant terms such as 'advertisement', 'position', 'culture', and 'lifestyle'. However, the range is somewhat basic and lacks the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. There are also minor errors, such as the missing article in 'look after six-year-old child' (should be 'a six-year-old child'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as the missing article in 'in response to your advertisement in Australian magazine' (should be 'an Australian magazine') and the incorrect sign-off 'your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly the lack of commas in lists, such as 'responsible patient and friendly'. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater accuracy in articles and punctuation would help you achieve a higher band.
