Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the position of living with your family for six months and looking after your six-year-old child. I believe this opportunity would be an excellent way for me to gain valuable experience while also experiencing Australian culture and lifestyle.

I consider myself a responsible, patient and caring person, and I have always enjoyed spending time with children. I have previously looked after my younger cousins and family friends’ children, which has taught me how to keep children safe, entertained and comfortable. I am also reliable and adaptable, and I would be happy to follow your family’s daily routine and help with basic household tasks when necessary.

During my free time, I would like to explore Australia and learn more about its culture and natural attractions. I am particularly interested in visiting local parks, museums and historical places. I would also enjoy improving my English by meeting new people and taking part in community activities.

I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Nirva patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job, provide relevant details about your suitability, such as your experience with cousins and your responsible nature, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the response maintains a consistent, professional focus throughout. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'I am also', 'During my free time', and 'I would also' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a formal letter. The use of referencing is accurate, and the overall structure contributes to a coherent and professional piece of writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a job application. Phrases like 'valuable experience', 'responsible, patient and caring', and 'adaptable' are used accurately. The language is natural and precise. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your message with precision and clarity, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is highly accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'I have previously looked after my younger cousins and family friends’ children, which has taught me how to keep children safe, entertained and comfortable.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the tone remains formal and consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the majority of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a high level of control over the language.
