Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
How are you. Hope you will be fine.
I just saw your advertisement in the newspaper regarding someone to live with a family for sometime and to look after their six year old child.
Dear Sir, in this regard I would like to offer my services.
I would request you to meet me once as I think I am a suitable person for the said job. I have previous experience of almost five years.
I am currently doing a job in an organisation which is responsible for the look after of children. But now I want to switch the job.
I would also like you to know that in my free time in Australia I will like to travel to new places and I have also planned to meet some of my old school friends.
Dear Sir, I request you to kindly consider my job request as I am genuinely looking for this job.
Thank you.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 5.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 5.0 |
| Overall | 5.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by expressing interest in the job, stating relevant experience, and mentioning plans for free time in Australia. However, it lacks specific details about why the applicant is suitable beyond stating work experience. More elaboration on personal qualities or skills related to childcare would strengthen the response. Additionally, the phrasing could have been clearer. Overall, the task achievement is adequate but could be improved with more relevant content.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
Coherence is somewhat present, as the letter follows a clear structure (greeting, introduction, main points, conclusion), but the flow between sentences and ideas feels abrupt. For example, the transition from work experience to free time activities is not smooth. The use of 'Dear Sir’ twice is unnecessary and can confuse the reader. Improving transitions and linking thoughts more fluidly will enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource is basic but appropriate for the task. Words like "previous experience" and "look after" are fitting, though somewhat simplistic. More varied vocabulary would elevate the letter; for instance, instead of saying "meet some of my old school friends," you might say "reconnect with former schoolmates." Using more sophisticated terms would convey a better command of the language and make the letter more engaging.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical accuracy is fairly strong, with mostly correct sentence structures. However, there are some inaccuracies, such as missing punctuation: "How are you. Hope you will be fine" should be a single sentence. Additionally, phrases like "I will like" should be corrected to "I would like" for proper conditional usage. These issues, while not too frequent, impact the overall professionalism of the letter.
Overall feedback
This letter shows a basic understanding of the task with a clear attempt to convey interest and qualifications for the job. To improve, the writer should focus on enhancing the content by including specific details about their childcare experience, relevant qualities, and making transitions between ideas smoother. Additionally, increasing the variety of vocabulary and correcting grammatical errors would significantly enhance the overall quality of the letter. Aim for clarity and depth to better fulfill the task requirements.
