Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
I am writing to apply for the position of living with your family and caring for your six-year-old child, which I saw advertised in an Australian magazine. I would be delighted to have this opportunity because I enjoy working with children and would also love to experience Australian culture and lifestyle.
I believe I would be a suitable person for this position because I am responsible, patient and caring. I have previously looked after young children in my family, so I understand the importance of keeping them safe while also making their daily routines enjoyable. I am also organized and reliable, and I would be happy to help with homework, prepare simple meals and organize educational games and outdoor activities.
During my free time, I would like to explore Australia and learn more about its culture. At weekends, I hope to visit local attractions, beaches and natural parks. I would also enjoy meeting new people and improving my English by taking part in community activities.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Jayraj Solanki

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting the job, provide relevant details regarding your suitability, such as your experience with children and your organizational skills, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a family looking for a caregiver. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional and polite manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your application to your qualifications and finally to your personal plans. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'because', 'previously', and 'during my free time', which help to link your sentences and paragraphs naturally. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow, which is essential for a formal letter of this nature.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a job application. Phrases like 'caring for your six-year-old child', 'experience Australian culture', and 'educational games' are well-chosen and accurate. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe your skills or your enthusiasm for the role. However, the current range is sufficient and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is consistently accurate throughout the letter. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'I have previously looked after young children in my family, so I understand the importance of keeping them safe while also making their daily routines enjoyable.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The control over verb tenses and sentence construction is strong, contributing to the overall clarity and professional tone of your writing.
