Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding a job which was posted for an experienced baby sitter on Australian magazine.

To begin with, what appeals me most on job is its full time requirement to move in and take care of 6 months old as I am vary good with handing childerens especially for age group of 5-10 year old. I believe full time oppurtunities will give me chance to make family bond with the kid. Moreover, I am first-aid train which will be an advantage in emergency situations and I also come along with 5 years of on field training in the ECE field. Lastly, I also have certification for mental counselling which can be helpful in worst case scenario.

I want to let you know that I am preparing for my TEF exam along side my job so If there is no problem I would like permission to carry that along in my free time.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the motivation, detailing suitability, and describing free-time activities. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. The mention of the child's age is inconsistent (the prompt specifies a six-year-old, but you refer to a '6 months old' and then '5-10 year old'). This creates confusion regarding the specific requirements of the role. While you mention your qualifications like first-aid and counselling, these could be expanded upon to better demonstrate your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the content needs more precision to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the main ideas, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to link your arguments. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'what appeals me most on job'. The transition between the job requirements and your personal free-time plans is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are several spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the professional tone. Examples include 'baby sitter' (babysitter), 'oppurtunities' (opportunities), 'handing' (handling), and 'childerens' (children). You also use some non-standard collocations like 'come along with 5 years of on field training'. While you attempt to use more sophisticated terms like 'counselling' and 'emergency situations', the frequent spelling mistakes and minor inaccuracies in word choice limit your score. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling errors and ensuring correct collocations will help improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include missing articles ('on Australian magazine'), incorrect preposition usage ('appeals me most on job'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('I am first-aid train'). Additionally, the sentence 'I am writing this letter regarding a job which was posted...' is grammatically functional but could be more concise. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your message. Increasing your control over basic grammar and punctuation will be essential for a higher band score.
