Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in a job posting which you advertised in an Australian magazine regarding to live with your family and look after your six-year-old child.

I am pursuing my masters degree and from next month my summer break is going to start and it will be six months long. I am looking for a job in this free period so I can make some money for my next year college fee and also save some money which I spend on accommodation.

I recently graduated with early child education course, it was two year diploma which specifically based on child care and child education. Moreover, I have two year experience as nanny in my home country and I also raised my two nephews. I believe my qualification and experience make me a good fit for this job.

I have lots of plans in my mind to spend my free time in Australia. One of them is to learn about Australian culture and history. I love to visit museums and historical places.

Secondly, I am good in art work, I make art pieces from waste products. I would love to teach this skill to your child as well.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to discuss further about this opportunity.

Kind regards,

Jasmeet Singh,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant details about your childcare qualifications and experience, and outline how you intend to spend your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is more grammatically precise, as 'regarding to live' is incorrect. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'Secondly', and 'One of them', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother in places. For example, the transition between your education and your experience could be more fluid. Overall, the information is easy to follow and the progression is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'pursuing', 'qualification', and 'opportunity'. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to childcare, such as 'early child education' and 'nanny'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'regarding to live' instead of 'regarding living' or 'concerning the opportunity to live'. Additionally, 'make some money' is slightly informal; 'earn an income' would be more professional. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'regarding to live' is incorrect, and 'my summer break is going to start and it will be six months long' is a bit clunky. You also have minor errors like 'two year experience' (should be 'two years of experience') and 'I look forward to discuss' (should be 'I look forward to discussing'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after certain phrases.
