Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Ma,

I am writing this letter in regard of your advertisement published last Tuesday in the Australian magazine that you need someone that would live with you for half a year in order to take care of your child.

I was delighted when I saw the advert because I have been looking a job for a while now, I want to raise fund for my sister to complete her program at the university.

Moreover, I believe I would be a suitable person to look after your son. I have five years' experience in this field. In addition, I enjoy taking care of children and playing with them.

To conclude, due to the love I have for the little ones, I would always spend my free time training your son how to play football and how to dance because those are my hobbies.

Thanks, as I look forward to your favorable response.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation for the job, highlighted your experience as a caregiver, and described how you would spend your free time. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited. For instance, the explanation of why you are a suitable candidate is brief, and the section on free time is somewhat repetitive, as you suggest spending your free time training the child in activities you already mentioned as hobbies. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on your skills and provide more specific, varied details about your interests and how they would benefit the family.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'To conclude' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but the progression of ideas could be smoother. For example, the transition from your motivation for the job to your suitability is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed point would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'suitable', and 'favorable response'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'raise fund' (should be 'raise funds') and 'training your son' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context; 'teaching' or 'coaching' would be better). To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to childcare and professional correspondence to demonstrate a wider range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'in regard of' should be 'in regard to' or 'regarding', and 'looking a job' should be 'looking for a job'. Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in '...for a while now, I want to...'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
