Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you i am interested in the job of staying with a family and take care of their children.

So long I have been looking for this type of job, I love to spend time with children. It would be a great opportunity for me to get experience which would be useful in my future.

I consider myself perfect for this position because I completed my study in the field of childcare. Therefore, i know how to handle child. Trust me i never let you down.

In my free time i would meet me childhood friend because he is living in Australia and we would visit many tourists places in Australia and also get chance to talk new people and would get chance to know about its culture.

I look forward your response. Thank you for your time.

Yours faithfully,

Damanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining your interest, detailing your suitability, and describing your free-time plans. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention studying childcare, you could have provided more specific examples of your experience or skills to make your application more persuasive. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks the depth of detail expected at higher band levels. To improve, try to expand on your points with more specific information, such as mentioning particular activities you enjoy doing with children or specific aspects of your studies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'In my free time' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea to enhance the overall logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'opportunity', 'position', and 'childcare'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take care of their children' (should be 'taking care') and 'talk new people' (should be 'talk to new people'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise and varied vocabulary related to childcare and travel, and pay closer attention to common collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you i am interested' (missing 'that' and capitalization of 'I'), 'So long I have been looking' (awkward phrasing), and 'I look forward your response' (missing 'to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the capitalization of 'i'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity and professionalism of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
