Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in respond to your advertisement in the Australian magazine looking for a child career to care for your six-years-old child. I am delighted with this opportunity for it will gives me the privilege to secure a job and live in Australian, is rare and I do not want to take it for granted.
I believe I would be the suitable person for this role for several reasons. I have three years experience working as a nanny in Lagos, where I looked after two children age five and eight year respectfully. During this time, I was responsible for preparing meals, helping with home work, organizing educational games and ensuring their safety. I am patient, responsible, a mother, also a caring nature, which I think is all essential when working for younger children. I also held a certificate in First- Aid from the Red cross Association of Nigeria , so I would be able to handle any emergency situation .
If I am successful, I would be very excited to explore Australian, its culture and taking a short courses possibly to improve my skills during my free time.
I have attached my CV for your consideration.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
your sincerely.
Mrs. Alamu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained your motivation for the job, provided relevant professional experience as a nanny, and outlined your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited; for instance, while you mention taking short courses, elaborating on which specific skills you hope to improve would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'During this time' and 'If I am successful' to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the awkward phrasing in the opening sentence. Despite these minor points, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'privilege', 'responsible', and 'emergency situation'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'child career' instead of 'child carer' or 'nanny', and 'six-years-old' (should be 'six-year-old'). Additionally, 'respectfully' is used incorrectly instead of 'respectively'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in respond to' (should be 'in response to'), 'it will gives me' (should be 'it will give me'), and 'I also held a certificate' (should be 'I also hold'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with spacing and capitalization. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free. However, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
