Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. My name is Aman and I am writing this letter to apply for the job that you had advertised in the local magazine.
I am quite interested in the job because it would be a great opportunity for me to stay with the native Australians, therefore I would be able to learn about the culture and traditions followed by the Australian families. Moreover, this job would help me to satisfy the basic necessities of life without any stress as it is well known fact that without a source of income, survival is difficult in foreign countries.
I believe that I would be the most suitable choice for this job because I have done a diploma in child care and adding on, I have 2 years experience of working with children. Most of the children instantly get comfortable with me. Thus, you will not have to worry about your ward under my supervision.
Along with taking care of the child, I can help him in his studies too. I have excellent culinary skills therefore, I can cook for the entire family too. Eventually, I would be pursuing a short term course at the nearest college from your residence to polish my skills. For the course, I would schedule the classes in the given free time only.
I will be grateful if you would consider my application for the job. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Aman Mehra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response covers all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant details about your childcare experience and qualifications, and outline your plans for your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a family. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an au pair or childcare position. You have successfully addressed the requirements of the task in a professional and logical manner, ensuring the reader understands your suitability and intentions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Thus', 'Along with', and 'Eventually' to link your ideas. The progression of information is logical, moving from your motivation to your qualifications and finally to your personal plans. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter. Phrases like 'satisfy the basic necessities of life', 'under my supervision', and 'polish my skills' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is generally precise, there are minor instances where word choice could be more natural, such as 'native Australians' (which sounds slightly clinical) or 'well known fact' (which is a bit clunky). However, these do not impede communication and you show an ability to use less common items effectively to convey your meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the job that you had advertised' (could be 'the job you advertised') and 'adding on' (which is informal and slightly awkward). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as the double space after 'and'. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over complex structures is sufficient to maintain a professional tone throughout the letter. The grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding.
