IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Ma,
I am writing to express my interest in regard to the advertisement published in the Australia magazine on Tuesday that you want someone that would take care of your son for half a year and be willing to reside with the family.
In all honesty, the reason why I want this job is because I want to raise some fund to support my younger sister's education. She supposed to have started her BSC program since last year.
I believe I would be a suitable person for your son. I love taking care of children and also, I have five years' experience in this field. In addition, I received an award last year for the best nanny in the organization I worked for.
Moreover, because of my love for the little ones, I would spend my leisure time in acquiring more knowledge in nurturing the children.
Thanks, as I look forward to receiving a favorably response from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Sarah Morgan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job (supporting your sister's education), provide evidence of your suitability (five years of experience and an award), and describe how you would spend your free time. However, the development of the final point is somewhat weak; stating you would spend your leisure time 'acquiring more knowledge in nurturing the children' is a bit repetitive and lacks the personal touch expected in a letter to a family. To improve, you could mention specific Australian cultural activities or hobbies you enjoy, which would make your application more engaging and realistic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'In all honesty' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be more sophisticated. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural rather than mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reside', 'leisure time', and 'nurturing'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'raise some fund' (should be 'raise some funds') and 'favorably response' (should be 'favorable response'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that word forms (nouns vs. adjectives) are used correctly in context. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'She supposed to have started' (missing the auxiliary verb 'was') and 'the Australia magazine' (should be 'the Australian magazine'). Additionally, 'I am writing to express my interest in regard to' is slightly wordy. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and auxiliary verbs. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences by proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score.
