Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of looking after your six-year-old child for six months. I would love this opportunity because I have always enjoyed spending time with children, and living in Australia would allow me to experience a new culture and way of life.

I believe I would be a suitable person for this job because I am responsible, patient and friendly. I have looked after young children in my neighbourhood and have experience preparing meals, helping with homework and organising fun activities. I am also reliable and understand the importance of keeping children safe and happy.

During my free time, I would like to explore Australia and visit places such as beaches, national parks and interesting cities. I would also enjoy meeting new people, improving my English and learning more about Australian culture.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Keith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for applying, provide relevant details regarding your suitability (such as experience with meals and homework), and outline your plans for free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to potential employers. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples of your childcare experience, such as mentioning a specific age range or a particular activity you have successfully managed in the past.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'I am also' and 'During my free time' to link ideas effectively. The opening and closing salutations are correct for the formal context. The flow is smooth, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text. To improve further, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'opportunity', 'responsible', 'patient', and 'organising' correctly. The language is natural and appropriate for the context of a job application. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items that demonstrate a broader command of the language, such as 'supervising', 'enthusiastic', or 'cultural immersion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing shows good control of grammar and punctuation. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as 'I am writing to apply...' and 'I believe I would be a suitable person...'. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the punctuation is accurate throughout the letter. The sentences are clear and easy to read. To move into the higher bands, you could experiment with more complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or a wider variety of subordinate clauses, while maintaining this high level of accuracy.
