Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter after reading your advertisement in Australian magazine. It was about you are looking for individual who can live with your family and can take care of your child for six months.

I really want to do this job, because I am in great need for the job. As I am a student in Australia and need money for my studies. I am on my college break for six months and I think this opportunity for me to do this kind of a job where I will get chance to live with family.

I have a background history of babysitting as I have this job last year but had to quit due to my studies. I am a reliable person and would not give you any chance to complain.

I would spend my free time with your family or going to park. Once in a month I will go to visit my friends .

I have attached my resume and all the information with this letter.

Thank you

Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your motivation, detailing your suitability, and describing your free time. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, your explanation of why you are a suitable candidate relies on a brief mention of past babysitting experience without providing specific examples of your skills or responsibilities. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your experience—perhaps by mentioning specific activities you enjoy doing with children or your ability to handle emergencies. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be more polished to better suit the context of applying for a childcare position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing for each requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because', 'as', and 'once in a month' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transitions could be smoother. For example, the jump from discussing your free time to mentioning your resume is abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your thoughts more naturally, which would help the reader follow your argument with less effort.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'opportunity', and 'reliable'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'background history of babysitting' (which is redundant) and 'I have this job last year' (incorrect tense). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive sentence structures. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives and professional phrases would enhance the overall quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'individual who can live' (missing article 'an'), 'I have this job last year' (incorrect tense; should be 'I had this job'), and 'I think this opportunity for me' (missing verb 'is'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of verb tenses, as these errors currently occur frequently enough to distract the reader.
