IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Adam Sir,
I am writing this email to inform you that I am able to work for you in order to look after your child, and I can even stay for a particular period of time.
Considering the situation, I am currently a full-time student and cannot work till that time. I was looking for a place to stay with the family for six months. Additionally, I will be happy to take care of your child while staying with you.
In terms of expectations, I have worked in a daycare for a year back home and have enough experience to take care of the baby. Moreover, I also love to stay around them because I can easily get along with the kids.
Indeed, I came here for my studies; undoubtedly, whenever I get time, I usually go to the park to play with random children, and sometimes I even visit the best place in Australia for sunset.
Thank you for taking the time to review my story. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Meet Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation, provided relevant experience, and described your leisure activities. However, the tone is somewhat inconsistent. The prompt asks you to write to 'parents' and provides a formal opening ('Dear Sir or Madam'), but you addressed the letter to 'Dear Adam Sir', which is not standard English. Additionally, the content regarding your suitability is slightly vague; while you mention daycare experience, you could have elaborated more on your specific skills with six-year-olds to better persuade the reader. The ideas are relevant but could be developed with more professional detail to fully meet the requirements of a formal application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Indeed' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition in the final paragraph regarding your studies and your park visits feels a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the flow and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and less like a list of points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'full-time student' and 'daycare'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'random children' and 'my story', which are not ideal for a formal letter of application. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more formal collocations suitable for a professional context rather than conversational or overly simplistic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'cannot work till that time' is awkward, and 'I also love to stay around them' is slightly unnatural in this context. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should aim to proofread for subject-verb agreement and ensure that your sentence structures are consistently accurate.
