Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to express my concern regarding an advertisement for the job I recently saw in an Australian magazine.

Actually, it was an advertisement for someone to live with a family for half a year and look after their six-year-old kid. I am really interested in this job. However, I want to let you know how much I love kids. I always wanted to spend free time with children. Even back in my country, whenever, I visit my grandparent's house, I used to spend most of my time with my nephews.

I believe that I am the most suitable person you are looking for as I have just completed my Early childhood diploma from University of Australia and I was searching for a job just like this. I also have an experience from my internship project in which I took care of children in orphan home.

Furthermore, I am also ready to live with your family . Adding to this, I am pursuing a course in the same field of early childhood so I will attend my classes in my free time and complete my studies. I hope you don't have any problem with this.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your interest in the role, detail your qualifications (Early Childhood diploma and internship experience), and describe your plans for your free time (attending classes). However, the tone is slightly inconsistent. The opening sentence, 'I am writing this to express my concern regarding an advertisement,' is inappropriate; 'concern' suggests a problem or complaint, whereas you should be expressing 'interest' or 'enthusiasm'. Additionally, the explanation of your free time is a bit vague regarding how you will balance studies with childcare duties. Overall, the task is addressed, but the tone needs adjustment to be more professional and suitable for a job application.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Adding to this' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of organization.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Early childhood diploma' and 'internship project'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice. For example, using 'concern' instead of 'interest' in the opening is a significant lexical error that changes the meaning of your intent. Phrases like 'six-year-old kid' are slightly informal; 'child' would be more appropriate in a formal application. While you attempt to use more specific vocabulary, these occasional errors in collocation and tone prevent a higher score. Expanding your range of formal synonyms would help improve your precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe that I am the most suitable person... as I have just completed my...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I also have an experience' (uncountable noun) and 'whenever, I visit' (unnecessary comma). Additionally, 'I always wanted' should be 'I have always wanted' to reflect the present relevance. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent use of articles and verb tenses.
