Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my sincere interest for working as a nanny to look after your six year old child. I saw your advertisement in an Australian magazine that you are looking for someone to live with you to take care of your child.
I would love to spend time with children because I also have two children. Moreover, it allows me to save my living cost because in an advertisement you mentioned that your are looking someone who can live with you. I am an international student pursuing healthcare profession in Australia.
I think I am a suitable candidate for this job because not only I can help in taking care of child, but also helps you in doing simple household chores like cooking, laundry and cleaning. I also have a driving licence so it is more convenient that I can do groceries, picking and dropping off the child to school.
I would love to spend my free time in exploring new places in Australia. Some of my friends are in Australia who will join me in my free time.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Navdeep Kahlon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your interest, detailing your suitability, and describing your plans for free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention having two children, you could expand on how this experience specifically prepares you for childcare. Similarly, the section on free time is quite brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended with more descriptive detail rather than just stating facts. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'not only... but also', and 'Some of my friends'. While the flow is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother, particularly when moving from your suitability to your household contributions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'sincere interest', 'pursuing healthcare profession', and 'convenient'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'save my living cost' (should be 'save on living costs') and 'doing simple household chores' (better as 'assisting with household chores'). You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'I would love to' and 'in Australia'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive adjectives and verbs to convey your suitability for the role more professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'interest for working' (should be 'interest in working'), 'your are looking' (typo), and 'picking and dropping off the child' (should be 'picking up and dropping off'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You show a good attempt at using complex structures like 'not only... but also', but ensure subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are checked carefully. Focusing on proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
