Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I have seen the advertisement regarding the employment offer for the home care in "New Times" magazine. I am interested in this role.

I have completed bachelors in child care assitant and did work for a school for 3 years. Now, I have my visa left in australia for 8 months, hence, I am looking for a short-term job and I think this will be perfect for me.

I have full availability and I can stay in your home. I am non-alcoholic person and have minimal friend circle, so, very less chances of me to take a day off or skip any day of working. Also, I can provide refrence if needed from my previous employer. I am very punctual and passionate about my work. That is why my employer recognized me as employee of the year.

The only time I need off will be the sundays because I am spritual person and try to spend my sundays at sikh temple. After that I visit library sometimes because I am really fond of literature books. Other than that I have no such requirements. Please reach out to me if you have any queries on my phone [redacted phone].

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Sonia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your interest in the role, provide relevant background regarding your childcare experience, and describe how you intend to spend your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to potential employers. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are balanced; for instance, the section on your free time could be slightly more descriptive to provide a more personal touch, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also', 'That is why', and 'Other than that' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between your professional experience and your personal habits could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'punctual', 'passionate', and 'spiritual'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'bachelors in child care assitant' (should be 'Bachelor’s degree in Childcare Assistance') and 'very less chances' (should be 'very little chance'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and word forms. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary related to professional settings and ensuring correct spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have completed bachelors' (missing article), 'did work for a school' (should be 'worked'), and 'I will look forward to hearing' (should be 'I look forward to hearing'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with spacing after periods and commas. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over articles, verb tenses, and sentence punctuation will help you achieve a higher score.
