Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter with respect to your advertisement in one of the magazine regarding needing someone for six months to take care of a six year old child.

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself. I am a 27 year old student who is studying in a renowned Australian university. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Child Psychology. I am an Indian national who did his bachelors in Child Psychology back home and got here in Australia for my further studies last year. I would like to apply for this job and would love to be considered for this position for obvious reasons. I am really fond of kids and love to spend time and take care of them in general.

Secondly, I would like to re-iterate on the fact that based on my academic choices and immense love for kids, l would be very suitable and efficient for this job opportunity. I am a person with deep ties to my family back home with some great experience in looking after kids from ages 5-10. I can also provide some references which might help you make your decision.

Since, I would be starting my research soon, I am planning to spend my free time working on the research paper and hoping to publish it with a renowned child psychologist here in Australia. Being a student and working on my paper, I would also be a best fit for this position as I can spend majority of my time looking after the kid. Also, this opportunity would help me save some money in rent for six months.

I am really excited for this opportunity and hoping to hear from you soon. Please let me know in case you need any further details from my end.

Sincerely.

Abhi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the job, provided relevant details regarding your suitability (your background in Child Psychology), and described how you intend to spend your free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the advertisement. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and your situation as an international student. The response is well-structured and fulfills all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Since' to guide the reader. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the cohesive devices are slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between your academic background and your suitability could be more fluid. However, the overall progression of ideas is logical, and the use of paragraphing is effective in separating the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'renowned Australian university', 'pursuing my Masters', and 'deep ties to my family' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 're-iterate on the fact' (reiterate does not take 'on') and 'I would be a best fit' (should be 'the best fit'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You show an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to your field of study, which adds credibility to your application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'did his bachelors' (should be 'did my bachelors' to maintain consistency with the first-person perspective) and 'in one of the magazine' (should be 'magazines'). Additionally, there is a slight misuse of articles and prepositions in places. Despite these occasional slips, your control of grammar is good, and the meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the overall readability of the letter.
