Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for a position of childcare assistant. I recently read your advertisement in an Australian magazine and it immediately caught my attention because it closely aligns with my past experience in child-care. Moreover, I have already applied for student visa in Australia therefore, this job would help to manage my expenses while studying.

I believe that I am perfectly suitable for this role, because dealing with children requires great deal of patience, empathy and understanding, and I have all these qualities extensively. Moreover, my previous experience has taught me comprehensive understanding of children behavior.

During my stay in Australia, I would like to learn about local culture and tradition to broad my horizon of knowledge. I have also planned to improve my language skills through interacting with people outdoor during free time. I think this would be the most effective way to do so.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your motivation, highlight your suitability through your experience with children, and outline your plans for free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention having 'all these qualities extensively,' providing a concrete example of a past childcare situation would have made your suitability more convincing. Similarly, your plans for free time are a bit generic. Expanding slightly on how you intend to interact with locals would have added more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'During my stay' to link ideas. However, the use of 'Moreover' at the start of two consecutive paragraphs makes the transition feel slightly repetitive. Additionally, the connection between your visa application and the job could be smoother; for example, you could clarify that you are seeking a stable environment while you pursue your studies. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the overall progression of information is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'closely aligns,' 'comprehensive understanding,' and 'broad my horizon' show a good attempt at using more sophisticated language. There are a few minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'broad my horizon' (should be 'broaden my horizons') and 'children behavior' (should be 'children's behavior'). Despite these, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and your meaning is always clear. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure grammatical accuracy when using complex phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'apply for a position of childcare assistant' (missing 'the'), 'applied for student visa' (missing 'a'), and 'great deal of patience' (missing 'a'). Additionally, 'children behavior' lacks the possessive apostrophe. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The sentence structures are generally controlled, and you demonstrate the ability to use complex sentences to express your thoughts. Focusing on articles and possessive forms will help improve your accuracy.
