IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the position of childcare assistant. I recently read your advertisement in an Australian magazine and it immediately caught my attention because it closely aligns with my past experience in childcare. Moreover, I have already applied for a student visa in Australia. Therefore, this job would help to manage my expenses while studying.
I believe that I am perfectly suitable for this role, because dealing with children requires a great deal of patience, empathy and understanding, and I have all these qualities extensively. Moreover, my previous experience has taught me a comprehensive understanding of children's behavior.
During my stay in Australia, I would like to learn about local culture and traditions to broaden my horizon of knowledge. I have also planned to improve my language skills through interacting with people in public during free time. I think this would be the most effective way to do so.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the motivation for the job, detailing suitability, and describing plans for free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention having 'patience, empathy and understanding', providing a specific example of how you applied these traits in a previous childcare setting would have strengthened the response. Similarly, the section on free time is a bit generic. Expanding on specific cultural interests or activities would have provided a more fully developed response, moving it closer to the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'During my stay' to link sentences and ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of cohesive devices or ensure that the transition between the motivation for the job and your suitability is even more seamless, perhaps by linking your personal qualities directly to the needs of the family mentioned in the advertisement.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'aligns', 'comprehensive', and 'broaden my horizon'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a formal letter. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice. For example, 'broaden my horizon of knowledge' is slightly awkward; 'broaden my horizons' or 'expand my knowledge' would be more idiomatic. Additionally, 'dealing with children' is acceptable, but 'caring for children' or 'supervising children' would be more precise in a professional context. Increasing the use of less common, precise vocabulary would enhance this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'I recently read your advertisement... because it closely aligns with my past experience'. Grammar is generally accurate, and there are no errors that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If I were to be selected...') or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility. The punctuation is correct throughout, and the overall control of grammar is solid, supporting clear communication.
