IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have seen an advertisement in an Australian magazine for someone to live with a family for six months and look after their six-year-old child.
Write a letter to the parents. In your letter
- explain why you would like the job
- give details of why you would be a suitable person to employ
- say how you would spend your free time while you are in Australia
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the position of childcare assistant. I recently read your advertisement in an Australian magazine and it immediately caught my attention because it closely aligns with my past experience in childcare. Moreover, I have already applied for a student visa in Australia. Therefore, this job would help to manage my expenses while studying.
I believe that I am perfectly suitable for this role, because dealing with children requires a great deal of patience, empathy and understanding, and I have all these qualities in abundance. Moreover, my previous experience provided me a comprehensive understanding of children's behavior.
During my stay in Australia, I would like to learn about local culture and traditions to broaden my horizons. I have also planned to improve my language skills through interacting with people in public during free time. I think this would be the most effective way to do so.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, outline your suitability through your experience and personal qualities, and describe your plans for free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of your childcare experience, such as mentioning specific activities you have done with children or a particular situation you handled, rather than just stating you have 'a comprehensive understanding'. This would make your application more persuasive and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'During my stay' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that the transition between your personal qualities and your specific experience is even more seamless, perhaps by using a more sophisticated linking phrase to connect your character traits to your professional history.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application, such as 'aligns with', 'comprehensive understanding', and 'broaden my horizons'. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms. For instance, instead of 'dealing with children', you could use 'supervising young children' or 'providing developmental support'. Overall, your lexical control is solid and supports your message well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I recently read your advertisement... and it immediately caught my attention' is a well-constructed compound sentence. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to vary your sentence structure even more by using a wider range of subordinating conjunctions or passive voice constructions where appropriate, such as 'Having gained extensive experience in childcare, I am confident in my ability to...'.
