Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in excellent health. I am writing this letter to request you to hire me for the position of a caretaker of your six-year-old child for half a year.

To begin with, by introducing myself, I have previously worked as a day care school teacher. I am kind, compassionate and benevolent in nature. I have immense love for children. Though sometimes dealing with kids could be an uphill task but somehow I love engaging with them, as it is a fun and rejuvenating exercise altogether.

Besides looking after, I can also help the child in studies and can indulge him/her by doing art & craft or playing different games of his/her interest in their free time. I would also recommend enrolling the child into different sport activities which will enhance his/her cognitive skillset.

Also, I would like to inform you that on weekends I prefer doing volunteering activities by helping disabled children suffering from illnesses like autism and many others.

I have attached required documents and I hope the above information is adequate. Kindly look forward to my application and I would be awaiting a positive response from you.

Regards,

Pallavi Chanchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained your motivation, highlighted your experience as a daycare teacher, and described your weekend plans. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. However, the development of the third bullet point is slightly brief, and the opening salutation 'Dear Madam' does not match the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam'. While the content is relevant and clear, providing more specific examples of your childcare experience or more detail regarding your personal interests in Australia would have strengthened the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Besides', and 'Also' to transition between points. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the connection between your professional experience and your personal weekend activities could be more naturally integrated to improve the overall cohesion of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'compassionate', 'rejuvenating', and 'cognitive skillset' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'indulge him/her by doing art & craft', where 'engage' or 'occupy' would be more precise. Additionally, 'caretaker of your six-year-old child' is acceptable, but 'nanny' or 'au pair' would be more natural in this specific context. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively, with a few attempts at less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'by introducing myself, I have previously worked', which is a dangling modifier, and 'dealing with kids could be an uphill task but somehow I love engaging with them', which is slightly informal and structurally awkward. Punctuation is generally accurate, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and your control of grammar is sufficient to ensure that your message is communicated without any difficulty for the reader.
